Technology is always changing... After watching the YouTube video The Machine is Us/ ing Us, there is almost an urgency to find some sort of web responsibility. No I don't mean paying your internet bill, but actually understanding the programs you're using or even the different documents you're reading and the copyright laws that go with those great resources. This day-in-age virtually anyone can use a computer and the internet. In North America alone, according to the internet world stats, "73 percent can use the internet." That is a whole lot of people browsing around. Because of all the file sharing, plagarising and social networking cites, we have created a world where just about anything goes. I mean you go to any search engine, type in one word and get thousands of different references. Our computer systems our so user friendly that I could go to one website, copy and paste some content, go to another website on the same subject, copy and paste and BAM, I now have a term paper. Not everything is what it seems on the internet and people need to start taking responsibility for what sites they visit and whose work they are using. Always give credit where it is deserved and learn about something before you abuse it.

I like how you mention how easy it is for someone to copy and paste words from different sites and claim them as their own. I agree when you say that people need to take responsibility for their actions. People need to site their sources. It seems like that action is becoming neglected.
ReplyDeleteI like how you mention the incredible volume of information available online...and it's available to virtually anybody. It is pretty insane to think you can be stumped or curious about just about any topic in the universe, and with a few simple clicks on the computer, you can have an endless supply of data and information to answer your question. Of course we need to be careful with credibility online, understanding just about anyone can put things online. However, if we just take the credible information into account, there still is plenty out there to put your mind to rest on any subject.
ReplyDeleteI also liked how you said anyone can just log on to the internet, copy and paste and claim them as their own. I think that people that are using the internet daily and have respect for it should almost take a step back and use other resources that are at hand to them like magazines, the library and newspapers. If we used other resources including the internet we might gain a new respect for the internet.
ReplyDeleteCopy and paste works so well for so many things like URLs, addressing envelopes, form letters, etc. We tend to do it so often without ever thinking that we just copy and paste someone else's work, too. Being aware of the problem is a giant step in solving it. Sadly, many people who do this are totally unaware that they are plagarizing.
ReplyDeleteThere really is no excuse for plagiarism. Although the "temptation" to cut-copy-paste might lurk with the lazy writer, detecting plagiarism has never been easier. For a student, automatic "F." For a professional, automatic loss of credibility, perhaps loss of job.
ReplyDeleteGood post. Always cite your sources. Don't steal someone else's words. As writers, they are all we have of value.
