Brian Solis and Deirdre Breakenridge's Putting the Public Back in Public Relation's: Ch.1

I will be doing a series of blogs about the book Putting the Public Back in Public Relation's. The first chapter entitled, "What's Wrong with PR," brought out the problems within this field in a good way. It's not about bashing PR people, but about bringing what they have learned to everyone else. Change is scary, and public relations is going through a change that many people want to turn there back to either because they don't understand or they don't want it. This book really shows that to be successful you need to be able to adapt to the changing times because if you don't, you surely will not last.
There are many reasons listed in the first chapter about what is wrong with PR. They are not trying to bash anyone, but just bring everything out in the open. To be able to make ourselves better PR people and change, we must first know what needs to be changed.
The one thing I think that really needs to be at the top of every PR person is communication. Without good communication you will not know what the public wants or what the client wants. By surfing the web and reading other blogs you can really get connected and be apart of PR 2.0.

  1. I completely agree. I think that the book is trying to guide public relations and trying to show that change is necessary. I also don’t think Solis was bashing PR but stating the straight up facts of the issue. It’s amazing to see just how wrong PR has truly been. At the same time I think PR has followed the trend of the times. It’s just like fashion for example. Looking back on photos from high school I wonder why I wore some of the things I did. And it’s because back then it was what was “in” or “stylish.” Same goes for PR. It seems though that PR is not changing fast enough to keep up with the new times. I am glad to see Solis finally acknowledging this problem.

  2. This book is going to be a guide into the future of PR. PR is changing fast and we need to keep up with it. Starting in college now will prepare us better for when we enter the field and hopefully introduce other antics to other PR professionals. I do agree also that Solis was not bashing PR professionals but giving descriptive criticism and being direct.
